Overnight adventures on an off-grid, wild-ish campsite with campfires allowed in Carmarthenshire.

When it comes to outdoor adventures, it’s always good to have someone on hand who knows what they’re doing. Step forward Rhys Green — a mountain leader, paddlesport coach, bushcraft expert and leader of expeditions around the world. He’s now also a campsite owner and has put together a site where you can dip your toe into the world of wild-ish camping in Carmarthenshire. It will be just a toe, mind: Llansawel Agored is a certified, bonafide campsite with a thumbs up from the Greener Camping Club.

That accreditation means Rhys is looking after his land as well as his campers. He’s planting trees, providing eco-friendly composting toilets and generally keeping the impact of his site light. From a camping point of view, you can expect a natural environment and a wild-ish experience with campfires allowed, plenty of space and cars parked away from tents.

There are 20 acres of gently undulating meadows, young orchards and scrub. Campers are free to explore the lot. You can walk, carefully, among Rhys’ newly planted trees (1,000 and counting so far), sit by the stream and, of course, camp out under the stars. There are just eight camping pitches: six are “standard” but spacious, just a patch of grass with shared facilities a short walk away, while two are super-sized “Camping +” pitches. These are a little more tucked away, come with a dug-out fire pit, their own composting loo and a three-sided shelter to provide an area for escaping inclement weather. The top spots are the three pre-pitched bell tents with beds, their own compost loo and cooking kit in their outdoor kitchens.

Rhys is never far away, sometimes popping by to check his campers are enjoying their stay, occasionally texting to see if they need anything. His outdoor credentials mean you can tap him up for tips on campfires and where to find outdoor adventure. The mountain bike trails of the Brechfa Forest are an eight-minute ride away, the western edge of the Brecon Beacons a 30-minute drive.

Camping Plus
Great to have the choice of pitches with a cooking shelter. Rhys was really helpful with recommendations. Be prepared for a bit of a walk from the car with your stuff (large wheelbarrows provided) but once you get to the pitch you're in a lovely peaceful valley. Thanks for a great stay Rhys!

Spacious quiet campsite
Lovely campsite with a small number of big, spacious pitches. Quiet with beautiful views and fairly close to lots of things like mountain bike trails in Brechfa Forest, the car-free Swiss Valley cycle route, the Brecon Beacons, Llansteffan beach, the Gower Penninsula. We did some great bike rides and walks. Also recommend the Botanic Gardens and its Birds of Prey Centre, and the Black Lion pub at Abergorlech for great food from local producers. Rhys the owner is super interesting and super helpful - he even lent us a night camera to see what wildlife was visiting our pitch at night.

From the host
This is a small campsite with ample space. For years there has been a desire to open and run a campsite here, Rhys the campsite owner is a mountain leader, paddlesport coach educator and has run expeditions globally he understands camping. These 20 acres are developing annually, planting over 1000 trees in 2021, and a further 2600 in 2022, developing ponds and wildlife habitats this is a unique space for all to enjoy. Not only do we have these spaces but we are set away from car noise and have dark skies making it easy to spot all of the stars and the milky way. We do have something for everyone in our area, mountain biking is 10 minutes by bike away, the Brecon Beacons area within 30 minutes, White Water adventures are 30 minutes away or a stroll around Dinefwr being 20 minutes away. We have gold mines, red kites all close by and beaches are within 45 minutes.
Nearby attractions
The area is great for scenic walks and mountain biking — mountain bike coach and campsite host, Rhys, will be able to point you in the right direction for both. The MTB trails at Brechfa Forest are a 10-minute ride from site. You can also book on-site archery and bushcraft lessons with Rhys and he has great links to local instructors for mountain biking, canoeing and other activities. The western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is just 12 miles away with the Red Kite Feeding Station (01558 825910) at Llanddeusant not much further. The Dinefwr estate (01558 825910) with its deer park, historic house and the ruins of Dinefwr Castle is just on the edge of the national park, too, and about the same distance away. You can reach the beaches of Wales' south or west coasts within an hour (both are around 30 miles away).
Food and drink
There are two pubs within walking distance: The Black Lion (01558 685263) and The Angel Inn, both less than a mile away in Llansawel. Further afield, The Forest Arms (01267 202288) in Brechfa (eight miles from site) is recommended and, if visiting Lampeter (10 miles away), Rhys suggests a visit to Conti's Cafe (01570 422 202).
